That was the last time the Pittsburgh Pirates had a winning record before Gerrit Cole pitched a gem against the Texas Rangers last night, leading the Pirates to their first winning record since Cole was 2 years old! This inspired me to take a look at how the rest of the MLB has fared since 1992. Here is a chart showing how many winning seasons (and seasons at .500) each team has had since 1992. This chart includes 1992, and also 1994 and 1995, which were shortened by the strike.

Not surprisingly, the Yankees and Braves top the list, and the Royals (haven't made the playoffs since 1985?!) and Pirates are at the bottom. There are a few surprises that jump out to me. The Houston Astros at 14 winning seasons seems like a lot considering how bad they have been recently. But the Astros of the 90s did have Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, and they won a lot of games. Another surprising fact to me is that 4 of these teams, Colorado, Miami, Arizona, and Tampa Bay, weren't even around in 1992 and all have at least a handful of winning seasons. Colorado and Miami (then Florida) joined the league in 1993 and Arizona and Tampa Bay in 1998. Also, even the Cubs have had 9 winning seasons since the Pirates last won 82 games!
